International Children's Festival - April 23rd - official holiday
Turkey is celebrating the Children Festival on April 23rd, and Marmaris is no exception! It is an official holiday all over the country. All children and their families come to the stadium in the center of Marmaris or gather in their school yards, where the children participate actively by reading poems, singing and dancing. This festival is unique to Turkey, enjoying the nationwide and worldwide attention and participation. In larger cities of Turkey many international children of school age are visiting Turkish families for a week for a cultural exchange.

The 23rd of April National Sovereignty and Children's Day in Turkey is a unique event. The founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, dedicated April 23 to the children of the country to emphasize that they are the future of the new nation. It was on April 23, 1920, during the War of Independence, that the Grand National Assembly met in Ankara and laid down the foundations of a new, independent, secular, and modern republic from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire. Following the defeat of the Allied invasion forces on September 9, 1922 and the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne on July 24, 1923, Ataturk started his task of establishing the institutions of the new state. Over the next eight years, Ataturk and his followers adopted sweeping reforms to create a modern Turkey, divorced from her Ottoman past. In unprecedented moves, he dedicated the sovereignty day to the children and entrusted in the hands of the youth the protection of this sovereignty and independence.
We publish photos of this unique celebration on the website and social media to show how it all went in Marmaris.

According to old belief it is unlucky to get married or start a new business in the period between these two holidays. The belief is to give one-third of a sacrificed animal's meat to the poor, and share two -thirds of the meat between the family and neighbours. Nowadays Turkish people also choose to donate the money they would spend on buying an animal to the charities, army, education programmes and organizations instead.

Turkish Republic Day - October 29th - official holiday
On October 29, 1923, Ataturk declared the new Turkish State a "Republic". He dispelled his country's archaic beliefs and customs for it was essential for Turkey to Westernize to progress towards the level of contemporary civilizations. The series of reforms were welcomed by the Turkish people. The new Turkish State founded in 1920 requires a new legal system; thus Ataturk adopted the Swiss Civil Code as substitute for Canonical Law, and instead of the penal code then in force brought the Italian Penal Code. As a result of such a modification, secularism, one of the fundamentals of Kemalism, signifying the complete separation of government and religious affairs, was adopted. Also a university reform was introduced in 1933 since the Ottoman systems of education did not meet the needs of the society. One of the most important reforms of Ataturk was the abolition of use of the Arabic script and the adoption of the Latin script; in 1928 the new Turkish Alphabet was adopted. Also with the reforms of Ataturk, Turkish women, who for centuries had been left neglected, were given new rights. Thus with the civil code passed, Turkish women would enjoy equal rights with those of the men, could be appointed to official posts, would enjoy the right to vote and to be elected to the Parliament. With the reform on dress, women stopped wearing veils and "carsaf"; men started to wear western style hats rather than the "fes". As a result of the reforms, Turkey's economic structure was completely changed for the better. Ataturk's foreign policy is based on, as he himself has underlined, "Peace At Home, Peace In the World".
