Simple guide to Election Day: Key Facts and Rules for tourists

What date is the election day in Turkey?

On May 14, voting will be held to elect a president and members of parliament. And with that in mind, Marmarisinfo.com has prepared a guide for tourists so you can follow up.

What time is the voting?

Voting takes place from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. on May 14 2023.

How will voting be done?

There are 64 million eligible voters for the current election in Turkey.

Voters are allowed to cast their ballots at one of the local schools nearest to the residential address.

Here is how voting will happen:

Voters go to the assigned polling places at the local schools as the polls open for voting.
The manual method of voting and results transmission remain the legally approved methods in Turkey.

When will we know the election results?

On May 14 the announcement of the temporary results of the presidential election will be made at 23:59.
On May 19 the announcement of the final election results will be made by the Supreme Election Council (YSK).

What to know about the Election day if you are a tourist in Turkey?

The election campaigning allowed for the ten days before the election will end on 13 May and the election silence will start at 06:00 p.m.

Publishing polls, surveys, or anything that could influence votes is also prohibited in the 10 days following the country’s vote.

Will alcohol be sold?

On election day May 14, the sale of alcoholic beverages will be prohibited from 6 a.m. until midnight.
However, the tourists staying in all inclusive hotels in Marmaris and Icmeler will be served alcohol as usual.

Will staff in hotels and tourist destinations work?

Most of the long term staff’s home is Marmaris or Icmeler. As for the new staff those will go home to cast their votes. Despite of that all hotels in Marmaris and Icmeler will remain open on the election day May 14 2023.

Since the voting begins at 08:00 AM most drivers, captains and hotel and tour staff will be able to cast votes before work on Sunday. Most tours and attractions will be running and open.

Will shops be closed?

The markets and supermarkets will be open as usual but the Wines, Beers & Spirits departments will be closed.

Will entertainment be available?

Many entertainment venues will be closed or restricted to solely serving food to patrons.

Will transport be available?

The vast majority of Marmaris’ public transport will be running as usual on the Election day. There are no road closures in Marmaris or Icmeler.

Will cafes and tea houses be closed?

Coffeehouses, tea houses and internet cafes will be closed on election day.

Will weddings take place on the day of elections?

Weddings may be held after 6 p.m. on the Election day.

Will schools be open the next day?

Schools will be closed on Monday, May 15.

Are there any security concerns?

For the past few weeks there have been attacks on candidates, meetings and party offices. Exercise normal safety precautions while in Marmaris Turkey.
