Special Thanks to....
OLD FRIENDS FROM HOLLAND
Of course you have met Anke Baks and Margo Vos,
Turkish Van cat breeders from Holland. Anke and
her husband, you will have seen the photos of
them erecting climbing post at the old shelter,
(yes, I know they fell down again, but thats not
the point!!!)
Then Margo and Anke came together loaded down
with tons of food and cat toys and lots of love.
Though they were unable to come for a while,
they still supported us and kept in touch.
NOW THEY ARE BACK AGAIN
Margo, promising for many years that she would
bring her vet with her, finally did in November
2002. Piet wanted to spend a week at the shelter
operating and treating the cats. But as Karin
Pötter and her veterinary team had just been the
previous month - there was nothing much for them
to do.
We couldn't let Piet and Margo have a real
holiday so I spoke with Behçet our local vet and
friend (he totally supports our street action).
Behçet had a new assistant, Sukru fresh from
vetinary school and no practical experience and
Piet at one time a vetinary teacher - perfect!!!
Luckily November isn't a busy period so Sukru
and Piet set up an operation room in the back of
Behçet's clinic and for a week we caught street
cats for sterilization and Sukru got his
practical experience from an expert!!! (super
insurance for the future). Sukru is a natural
and will be an excellent surgeon, said Piet.
Margo and Piet would like to thank the Mares
Hotel for their week's free accommodation and we
would like to thank Margo and Piet for their
'legacy', Sukru will be a fantastic addition to
the future of our work on the street and at the
shelter.
Just after New Year Margo and Anke were at last
together here. They had so much for the shelter
(it's a wonder that the plane left Amsterdam
airport) food for the kittens, toys, Christmas
cakes, cheese and bacon (for me of course!)
electric cat blanket, infra red lamps,
medicines, so so much and arrived with many
ideas of how they could help in the future.
Anke planned an article for a cat magazine and
announcements and advertising at cat shows.

That brought a little response, not as much as
they would have liked but they persisted and
persisted.
Margo opened a bank account in Holland with a
card for me to save time and higher bank
charges.
After the magazine came out people started to
show interest in adopting a cat. Margo's Mum and
new Dad started our adoption program by adopting
Biber our bottled raised white and brown tiger.
She was just 2 or 3 days old when we found her
in a carton box outside a bank. She's now one
year old and still has her bottle from time to
time.
With Margo and Anke (not forgetting Piet and her
two gorgeous children who have also visited us)
help from Holland is slowly growing and only
because of their love and persistance.
I thank these girls, their families and their
friends with all my heart.

At last in Summer 2003 Anke brought her gorgeous
husband Gert (Smurf) to Turkey, it was great to
see him back again it wasn't a holiday though.
Anke spotted two pregnant cats in the hotel
garden. She immediately caught them and took
them for sterlization at Behçet's clinic, then
spent the rest of her holiday with their after
care - Atta Girl!!!!
ANGELS FROM HEAVEN
As I told you in Millennium update that we had
new friends Anke and Margot from Holland and
Irene from Finland. True to their word they came
Summer 2000 Anke and her husband Gert came for a
short holiday but still found time to help with
some wooden climbing frames. And Irene came for
3 months as a volunteer and what a wonderful
serene calming influence she brought with her.
She is due again in a few weeks, so I am going
to ask her to write her own story for us. On the
photo Irene with a couple of the dogs, that she
loved to walk in the evenings also another with
her pal "Batman" who is slowly becoming our most
famous cat here after Hayat, as he immediately
throws himself at anyone who enters the shelter,
dinging and suckling.

With their donations last year, we gained a dog
enclosure, new roofs and shelvings, more trees
and greenery. A complete new higher power water
system, an electric drill, a lawn mower and lots
and lots of Morale.
Donations from America and Germany helped to pay
for a new clean water system. |
