Cleopatra Island is a wonderful spot surrounded by the Aegean sea

Cleopatra Island ( known as Sedir Island – Cedrae ) is located on the 18 km. north of Marmaris.

Famous for the golden sandy beach known as Cleopatra Beach and the ancient city of Cedrae or Cleopatra Island. The remnants of the city walls and ancient theatre ruins can be seen. There is an intimate beach on a small bay on the northwest of the island where Cleopatra used to swim. Walk barefoot along the stretch of pale pink sand which squeaks with each step and know that this unique sand is to be found nowhere else in the world.

The sands of the island are legendary and are believed to have been imported by Mark Anthony as a gift to his love Cleopatra. According to the legend, Cleopatra and Antonius used to swim here and the sands have been brought by ships from North Africa. It’s been said that this type of the sand can only be seen in Egypt.

The Amphitheater and fortifications are well worth a visit only if you can bear to tear yourself away from the breathtaking backdrop of mountains framing the bright azure waters of the bay. The ruins on the eastern side of the island represent the era of Romans. On the eastern side of the island there is an Agora. According to some epigraphs, athletics festivals have been organized in this area for the honor of Apollon.
