Summer is upon us... Now that Marmaris and the rest of Turkey as well as nearby Greek islands are in the grips of the first serious heatwave of the year and Marmaris is sizzling. After a slow May the resort seems set for a busy summer. One thing you'll most certainly want to do in the resort this summer is to attend as many events as possible! Whether it's an outdoor concert, a sports event or an exhibition, a sense of outdoor fun refreshes you faster than you can say Castlemaine XXXX. With the demise of most public festivals in this area there's been a welcome and steady rise in the revival of some of Marmaris oldest traditions. For the ultimate chill out take your togs, soak up some rays, pack a picnic and enjoy the excitement of outdoor events in Marmaris.

Tuesday July 15th 2008 the 6.3 earthquake at sea near the island of Rhodes slightly felt in Marmaris early morning. No damage or panic has been done in resort. This earthquake was felt as far as Fethiye and nearby areas.

On a very sad note the heatwave also seems to have been related to the forest fire that broke out on the afternoon Friday June 27th 2008 in Armutalan. Thanks to the effective firefighters' work on land and in the air the fire was put down in just two hours. Three helicopters and a number of firefighting cars were pulled immediatelly to the center of fire. Following that day we still hear the sound of wood cutting hamers, as the local government is making a road access through the forest in order to prevent this kind of tragedy again in the future.

Firefighting operation has been completed and helicopters are returning to base.

On a more practical level, EasyJet, the low cost flight company in U.K., has started flights to Dalaman on 31st of March and the fast passenger catamaran is running more frequently in the summer, still subject ot weather and demand. So trips to Rhodes require very careful planning to avoid futile expeditions.

Every Thursday there is a weekly village market in Marmaris, and the fruits that have come into season are peaches, cherries, nectarines, and watermellons.
The market is located three blocks away from the main street in the main two storey building in the center. See directions to the market by clicking here. The famous Uzunyali beach is one of the main building sites these days. Marmaris municipality has a long term project for beach improvements, and is now working on the central part of it from Captain Restaurant at the pier for excursion boats all the way down to Poseidon hotel. For this some bars or their parts had to be knocked down but the work down at the beach is moving along faster than it was expected. The good side to it is that the beach in this part of resort is wider with more space for sunshine lovers.

Further down on the way from Marmaris to Icmeler road works continue. Bulldozers and heavy lorries are busy, levelling the road and dumping fill into one side of the road (at the moment the right side, if coming from Marmaris), and traffic is directed to the left side in opposite direction on this tiny road. Due to the lack of road signs on that part of the road please drive slowly to make sure you do not miss the turn...

Down in the harbour cafes and restaurants enjoy a sea front location on the harbour and a cosy evening meal in their premises.

If you can think beyond the resort limits, think of going to a typical Turkish restaurant in Cetibelli called Caglayan Pinarbasi Restaurant for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

STEP 1. Fly to Dalaman, Bodrum or Rhodes which is another nearby international airport in Greece via sea route from Marmaris.

If you fly to Istanbul or Izmir you may then use a domestic flight to Dalaman airport which is 95 km to Marmaris.
